In astronomical terms, a total eclipse occurs when the Moon (full) fully enters the threshold zone (darkest internal shadow), projected by the Earth.
On the other hand, partial eclipses require that only part of the (full) Moon be hidden by the Earth’s umbra. It is worth remembering that lunar eclipses can be penumbral, partial, and total.
