6 Usui Sensei techniques: Reiki in its total fullness
The Japanese techniques that we will expose in this article refer to the exercises created by Usui Sensei, also known as Mikao Usui. Among other things, he was a Buddhist monk with knowledge of various holistic health techniques, born in Japan on August 15, 1865.
The Usui Sensei techniques that we will explore in this article are essential for the practice of Reiki. Some of these Japanese techniques can be found in the book “The Original Reiki Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui”.
Just like in meditation, the results of Japanese techniques are not immediately apparent. However, in some cases, a very quick result occurs, which can be lost over time. Certainly, we are not used to the increased amount of energy flowing in our body and, after a period, we will not feel so intensely. If this occurs, it is important to continue practicing the technique for at least three months.

Usui Sensei techniques
If you don’t have time to practice all Japanese techniques, choose one, two or three that will warm your heart. Focus all your energy on the practices and your effort will be rewarded.
If, before reading this article, you did not know any of the Japanese techniques, we advise you to find someone familiar to help you in practice. The best teacher is not a written theory, but a person with whom one can have personal contact.
It’s important to emphasize that Japanese techniques are only alternative means, that is, we must not deal with them only. Practices are instruments and cannot be considered as a replacement for traditional treatments.
1. Gedoku-Ho: the technique that will detoxify you
The Japanese term “doku” means poison or toxin and the term means to reduce. Therefore, the practice of Gedoku is used to eliminate toxins from the practitioner or a patient.
To perform it, you must place your hand on top of the tanden (point below the navel) and the other on the lower back, leaving them in these places for 13 minutes. Mentalize that the toxins are leaving the body affected. If you are doing it with a patient, ask them to imagine it too.
You can imagine that toxins are leaving the body through the feet, spreading and disappearing on the floor. Do not think that the earth will be contaminated with these toxins, as it can easily absorb this energy and transform it into elements that generate life. This is one of the Japanese techniques that can help eliminate the side effects of medications.
2. Tanden Chiryo: general energy revitalization technique
This is also one of the Japanese techniques that uses tanden – a point that is three fingers below the navel. Many say that tanden is the same as the second chakra, while others believe that it is an independent point, similar to a chakra.
When locating the point, place one hand on it and the other on the spine, at the height corresponding to the tanden. Leave your hands at these points until they come off independently of your body.
This is a general energy cleaning technique, both to treat yourself and other people. In addition to renewing energies, it can help to stimulate the self-will of the person who applies it.
3. Hanshin Koketshu-Ho: to bring back to the earth
The word “hanshin” means half the body and the word “koketsu” means exchange or mixing of blood. This technique has the mission of bringing the patient back to earth after treatment. The procedure must be done as follows:
- Ask the patient to turn over and bend their knees slightly;
- Help give the patient stability by placing your left hand on your left shoulder;
- Pass your hand gently ten to fifteen times in the shape of a cross above the spine, making downward movements.
- Start at the seventh cervical vertebra and descend to the left end.
- Hold your breath while you do these movements. After doing it ten to fifteen times, place the indicator on the left side of the column and the middle one on the right side. Make a downward and straight motion to your buttocks. When you reach the point below the fifth lumbar vertebra, press lightly with both fingers for a second or two.
4. Usui Sensei techniques: Hanshin Chiryo, treating half body
The translation of the word “han” is half and the word “shin”, body. The treatment of half the body is the goal of this technique. To do this, rub both sides of the spine from the buttocks up to the medulla oblongata.
This practice helps to relax the patient and has tranquilizing effects. In the Usui Sensei manual it is indicated for nervous disorders and for metabolism and blood disorders.
5. Byogen Chiryo: treatment of the roots of diseases
The meaning of the word “byo” is disease and the word “gen”, origin or root. This practice described by Usui Sensei has the same characteristics as the Genetsu-Ho technique and head treatment. The treatment of the head, intestines and abdomen covers important areas. Thus, it is possible to have an accurate picture of the patient’s physical condition.
We know that what we call disease often refers only to symptoms. Treating the symptom, in some cases, brings superficial and fleeting results. When a person complains of a headache, the real problem may be the spine or a consequence of dehydration. By applying the Reiji-Ho technique, we can even discover the cause of the discomfort. Therefore, we have to follow our intuition and not get carried away only by the patients’ symptoms.
6. Reiki Undo: a Reiki movement
The word “undo” means movement and refers to allowing the body to move without limitations. This exercise was introduced at Gakkar, but it is used in different cultures and traditions. In China, it is part of the practice of Qi Gong. In Indonesia, it helps to compose the Subud technique and in India, it is called Latihan.
The instructions for this practice are very simple. Look for a place where you can roll on the floor without interruption for 20 to 30 minutes. Start with Gassho and repeat to yourself: “Start, Reiki exercise”. Breathe deeply and release the air completely afterwards. If you are going to practice with someone else, keep your hands on your shoulders from behind, letting your body move freely.
Aspirate deeply and release maximum air when exhaling. After a few repetitions your body will start to move. If the movement does not occur, be patient and do not force yourself into anything. Perform this practice every day for at least three months.
Let yourself go
At first, it can be difficult to be difficult to let go completely and let your body move freely. You may think that you are an adult and should not behave like a child. Get that idea out of your head for 20 minutes and celebrate the freedom to behave like a child again.
Perhaps you are ashamed, but no one is watching you. Don’t think about anything in particular. Just give yourself free time. If a sound comes out of your mouth, do not hold it. If feelings and thoughts arise, feel them fully. Do not block anything.
Possibly, you will want to yawn or burp, or your eyes may water. Do not contain any response from your body, let it purge. Only your body knows what to do. Often, we have the evil habit of preventing our own healing. In daily life, certain limitations are necessary, but let yourself go with this experience.
